The Fire and the Dove - A Christmas Poem

Upon the straw and the dirt
from which we came
and which we will end
amidst blood and travail
a cleansing birth
no hero, no knight, but a baby
born not of gods, but man
the great receipt of grace
born to them, without question

Above them a star
a crowned knot of fire
brighter than flame of branch
men bringing their gifts
restored by the sight
despite their sins, he smiles

Only a baby, but so aware
of the souls fragility
of all that they've done and been
the bitter tastelessness
of the night's fruit
the worth of the soul's prayer

Upon the straw and the dirt,
from which we came
and which we will end
a dove bears witness
to bended, humble knee.
on the ground of their beseeching
a baby bears witness
to a hearts revealing
as the fire and dove are one

Paraphrasing Frost, a blog post begins in delight and ends in wisdom. At least if it's one of yours.

Merry Christmas, Brigid. Your friendship is something that I treasure.

I will respond to you all in the morning. Barkley got a case of kennel cough, after doggie day care. He will be fine, but we were up all night, a visit to the vet this morning. I didn't wish to leave him today, not feeling good and loopy from the medicine (I can't sleep on my dog pillow Mom, it's too tall, and I might fall off!)

But to all of you tonight, thank you for making an evening that didn't turn out as I had planned, warm and caring, and filled with the love of friendship.

To B.P., though, for comments not posted. I've been there, in more ways than you know. Stay strong, take strength in all the good that is within you, and thank God for the little things, the little freedoms we still all have.

Tomorrow, everyone. God Bless.

A beautiful gift your words are. Not just on these specific days but throughout the year. Another gift I have is your friendship. I am thankful for that.

My best to you and yours and I hope Barkley is back up to speed to kill toy trains soon.

Merry Christmas to you Brigid, and may this season of light in darkness bring you joy, as your light in darkness brings joy to me and to so many others...

PS I hope that Barkley is soon back to his usual perky self

Merry Christmas, Brigid, to you and yours. Your monkey bread has become a tradition at my home, and I just wanted to say thank you, for the recipes, and sharing, and introducing me to your circle of friends (Tam, Roberta, Old NFO, and the like).

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Barkley is doing better, I had to get up just once in the night to give him his cough medicine. Boy does it make him dopey, though he still stole my slipper this morning. Of course, he couldn't really move fast so I did my normal "chase him" but in slow motion "stoppppp BAARRRKLEEEEYYY, GIIIVE MEEE MY SLIPPERRRRRRR".

The house is quiet, there is leftover roast beast and fresh bread for sandwiches and some custard from Culvers. The phone bleeped a blizzard warning for tonight. Hopefully the bat phone will NOT ring today, tonight would not be a good one to be out.

May you all have a very wonderful day, alone or with family or friends, enjoy every minute of it.

Glad to hear Barkley is doing better! Our newest girl had kennel cough right when we adopted her. Scary nasty sounding thing, but she did well on the oral steroid and meds. She's a young thing though--I know why you were worried about your elder statesman!
